Federal Grants

The Developmental Disabilities Council is dedicated to advocacy, capacity building and system change activities for people with developmental disabilities. 

To support this commitment, we offer grants to support programs, projects and activities that fulfill the purpose of the Developmental Disabilities Assistance and Bill of Rights Act of 2000

This grant program is funded by the United States Department of Health and Human Services, Administration for Community Living/Administration on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (AIDD). 

We seek out opportunities in the following primary areas: 

  • Education: Evaluation, Access to Services and Supports, Rights and Transition 
  • Health and Community Based Services: Medicaid Waiver Services, and Behavioral and Mental Health Services
  • Employment: Job Coaches and Developers, Inclusive Employment at Market Wages, Vocational Opportunities, and Vocational Rehabilitation Services
  • Legal and Civil Rights: Access, Disability Rights, and Medicaid Waiver Services
  • Self Advocacy: Training, Leadership Skills, Self-Advocacy Skills, Online presence, and Access to technology

  • Best Buddies International, Inc.
    Best Buddies is a non-profit organization dedicated to establishing a global volunteer movement to create opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment, leadership development, inclusive living, and family support for individuals with I/DD. This grant supports Best Buddies’ efforts increase access to job developers and job coaches for New Mexicans with I/DD.

  • Disability Rights New Mexico 
    Disability Rights New Mexico (“DRNM”) is New Mexico’s federally-funded Protection and Advocacy organization. Its mission is to protect, promote, and expand the legal rights of people with disabilities. This grant is focused on improving special education supports and services throughout the State. DRNM works with other state agencies and organizations to improve special education outcomes statewide, and also provides direct assistance to families navigating the special education system.

  • Education for Parents of Indian Children with Special Needs
    Education for Parents of Indian Children with Special Needs (“EPICS”) is a non-profit organization that supports and advocates for families of Native American students with I/DD to receive educational resources. With this grant, EPICS is able to provide direct support to Native American families to advocate for appropriate Individualized Education Plans, transition services, and early intervention services.

  • University of New Mexico Center for Development and Disability
    UNM’s Center for Development and Disability (“UNM-CDD”) is New Mexico’s University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities, part of a national network of universities promoting inclusion and independence for people with I/DD through training, research, community services, and advocacy. DDC supports UNM-CDD’s Information Network, a database of resources, services, programs, and assistance available in New Mexico for people with I/DD. UNM-CDD also maintains a physical library where visitors can use assistive technology, accessible computers, magazines, toys, and games.

    Additionally, DDC supports the Partners in Policymaking program run by UNM-CDD. This project teaches people with I/DD and their family members to become community leaders. Participants learn the history of disability rights in the U.S., and also covers topics such as state and federal legislative procedures, employment rights, and community organizing.

  • Self-Advocate Support Project
    Led by a long-time disability advocate, Pamela Stafford, this project encourages and promotes opportunities for self-advocacy by New Mexicans with I/DD. Participants collaborate with groups and organizations across the State, such as regional People First communities, NM Allies for Advocacy, The Arc of New Mexico, and other state agencies.

  • Disability Coalition
    The Disability Coalition is a cross-disability coalition of organizations in New Mexico that represent and advocate for the needs and interests of people with disabilities. Current members include DDC, The Arc of New Mexico, Disability Rights New Mexico, the Independent Living Resource Center, and New Vistas. The Coalition promotes a collaborative and coordinated approach to public policy issues affecting people with disabilities, such as home-and community-based services, health care, employment, and education.

  • Equal Steps, LLc
    DDC works with Equal Steps, LLC, to send regular updates to the 1,500+ recipients on DDC’s mailing list about services, supports, and resources available throughout the state. Additionally, in-depth information on regular topics related to disabilities and disability rights.
